Lawrence Kansas Attractions
Our FOX4 Zip Trip this week takes us from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, home. The breathtaking Flint Hills surround us and form the backdrop to the campus of Kansas State University, the largest university in the United States. Once the epicenter of a Kansas dust bowl, grasslands are now a popular destination for campers and hikers who want to see the expansive landscape that made Kansas famous. This week, our girls took a four-day trip to one of our favorite places in Kansas - Flint Hill National Park.
From downtown Lawrence to the University of Kansas campus, there are enough attractions to keep you busy for days. If you're not hanging out in Lawrence and enjoying downtown attractions or seeing what the university has to offer, you can go to Clinton Lake for fishing, swimming or boating. You can imagine hitting one of the golf courses in the area, but that's not for the faint-hearted.
If you really enjoy art, you can always get involved in planning a Lawrence vacation or Lawrence ArtWalk. If you like theater, visit the Song Center at the University of Kansas and enjoy a romantic getaway to see a performance.
The University of Kansas campus boasts a number of impressive buildings, and the aforementioned Lawrence Arts Center is a high-quality museum on campus, as is the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics, which exhibits exhibits on the history of the United States and its relationship with the US government. If you're in Lawrence, you won't be able to walk without taking a look at Lawrence ArtWalk, the largest art walk in North America. Kansas' most famous urban legend is the Theorosa Bridge, which is located on the site of the historic Coronado Rock Monument on the west side of Lawrence. The monument's rocks are the remains of an inland sea that once crossed most of Kansas. In the same place is the wonderful Coronsado Museum, which honors the first Europeans who traveled to Kansas in 1541. For an experience out of this world, head to San Diego, California, just a few miles south of downtown Lawrence, to the San Francisco Bay Bridge.
If you have had enough of exploring Lawrence campus and the city by renting a car, you can take a road trip to the surrounding area. Aberdeen is located south of Kansas City, Kansas, just a few miles from Lawrence. The city is home to KU basketball and football games, making it a great destination for visitors. You can bet on the Kansas State University football team as well as the University of Missouri - Kansas and Kansas Lake State basketball teams.
Other destinations you can visit on your road trip include Kansas City, known for barbecues, jazz and fountains, as well as the Kansas State University campus and the University of Kansas.
The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, better known as Cos Atmosphere, is located in the city of Hutchinson. While my list of favorites in Missouri is long, this one has the best collection of animal exhibits in Kansas and is my family's favorite center in Kansas Nature Center. The city is also located on the Oregon-Santa Fe Trail, which runs through Lawrence and Douglas County, KS. Take a look at the Native American experience in Kansas and why we love it.
The city is also home to the University of Kansas, which is helping to create one of the most prestigious research universities in the country, the Lawrence School of Public Health.
The University of Kansas campus has a number of museums that are worth visiting, so you can stick around and see an exhibition at the Spencer Museum of Art. Lawrence, Kansas, has arguably one of the best music scenes in the country, and including concerts in Lawrence in your travels is also up for discussion. If you are considering visiting the city, be sure to check out what you can find on the university campus. Every minute of it is enjoyed by all residents, but above all by students, teachers, staff and students from all walks of life.
